"Mumps usually involves pain, tenderness, and swelling in one or both parotid salivary glands (cheek and jaw area). Parotid gland swelling has numerous documented causes beyond viral infection. This differential diagnosis appears in standard medical references, yet its implications for historical "mumps" epidemiology are rarely considered. Systematic reviews establish probable causation for multiple medications:
- L-asparaginase — 7 cases documented in 4 reports;
- Clozapine — 13 case reports;
- Phenylbutazone — 13 case reports.
Additional implicated medications include iodinated contrast media, thiouracil, isoproterenol, ritodrine, methyldopa, nifedipine, captopril, valproic acid, nitrofurantoin, doxycycline, phenothiazines, tricyclic antidepressants, and antihistamines. The mechanism varies by drug class, but the consistent finding is that parotid swelling represents a nonspecific response to circulating substances—not a signature of any single cause."

Citing the Noerr-Pennington doctrine, a U.S. appeals court on Monday ruled that because the FDA took no action against Merck after discovering the false labeling claims, it was the FDA's decision — not Merck's fraud — that injured competitor GSK and the physicians and physicians groups who bought the ineffective vaccine at inflated prices.

This documentary, based on a true story, shows the chilling way a drug company (Merck) went to extreme measures to fake the success of a mumps vaccine that claimed a 96 percent success rate.

The legal case, which is being actively litigated in the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals, has managed largely to avoid public scrutiny. This is despite the case and its outcome being very much in the public interest. The case documents were sealed until recently and are being unsealed in a piecemeal manner.
